Herd immunity to Covid, as it turns out, was a pipe dream.
Given the astonishing ability of the virus to mutate rapidly away from the various weapons we’ve conjured up against it, herd immunity to Covid-19 was never going to happen. All the chatter along those lines in the early months of the pandemic has given way to weary acceptance that the virus is here to stay, destined to take its place alongside the four other coronaviruses endemic to the human species.
That’s the bad news, as far as that goes.
But the good news is that we’ve benefited enormously from an ever-thickening wall of protection against the worst effects of the virus. Thanks to a huge assist from vaccines, joined to repeated boosts of immunity generated by natural infections, and helped along by a mutated virus increasingly defanged even as it becomes more contagious, we’ve been freed to resume our pre-pandemic lives.
Alas, we’re having a heck of a time embracing that freedom. Many of us continue to live in fear — fear stoked, inexplicably, by many of our political, medical, and educational leaders; leaders who have developed herd immunity, not to Covid, but to common sense; leaders who should…
